Che Guevara

Today is Ernesto Che Guevara’s Birthday:  June 14, 1928 – October 9, 1967

Che Guevara was born in Rosario, Argentina into a middle class family of Spanish-Irish descent and was the first of five children. He graduated from medical school in 1953 and travelled extensively throughout Latin America which brought him into close contact with poverty, hunger and disease. This instilled an intense desire to remedy social injustice first through medicine and then by armed insurrection.

In 1955 Che Geuvara met Fidel Castro in Mexico and becomes the third confirmed member of the expeditionary force being organised by the Cuban July 26 Movement to overthrow dictator Fulgencio Batista. On 2nd December 1956 the expeditionary rebel forces landed on Cuba’s south eastern coast in Oriente and so began the revolutionary war from the Sierra Maestra mountains.

Following Batista’s fall on January 1st 1959 in the new revolutionary government, Guevara’s role included President of the National Bank and Minister of Industry while continuing as officer in the armed forces.

In 1965 he left Cuba to export the ideas of Cuba’s revolution to other parts of the world. He went first to the Congo to train left wing insurgents and then in 1966 he led a guerilla movement in Bolivia against the country’s miltary dicatorship. In October 9, 1967 Guevara was captured and killed by the Bolivian army at aged 39.
